My college son informed me yesterday that he's not going back to college. He wants to move to another state to go to a tech. school to be a welder. I'm disappointed. I wanted my 3 kids each to have a college education. I was willing to do just about anything to make sure they got it.........and now it looks as if neither of my sons will take advantage of the opportunity........I've encouraged, I've pushed, I've preached, and I've tried to lead by example. It's just not going to happen..........and although I don't see my sons as failures, I feel as though I have failed as a parent.

the opportunity is so rare, I know. I am very fortunate. It must be hard (and I dont look forward to it) to watch our children make choices for themselves that may take them on a more difficult path financially, and educationally because to fall back on a college degree is priceless. My mom never went to college and ended up only able to beg her way into big jobs in fundraising because she was so organized and such...she had a lot more to prove just because she didnt have a college degree. She did it but it was made harder. Dont be so hard on yourself. Your children eventually get minds of their own and have their own rational I would think and you can't control that. He perhaps THINKS he is using what you taught him and in a way may be...you raised an independent thinker it seems. There's nothing wrong with that. Trust that he will be okay. (oh, and my dad went to college when he was 31 and ended up an extremely successful businessman making lots of money and sent me to college, paid in full, I am very lucky)
If they're still alive and not in jail/on drugs you have done a superb job.
PS. Welders can make a TON of money.
You haven't failed as a parent, you've empowered him to be honest with himself and with you. You've told him his whole life he can be whatever he wants to be, and now it's time for him to find out.
He can always go back later, mama. Your hard work set an example he'll model wherever he chooses to make a living. Hugs to you.
Thanks, you guys. I don't feel so bad after having read your comments!
Hi, student nurse jack. I'm glad you stopped by. :O)
Stepping.......my mom graduated from college when she was 47! It's never too late, huh?
